1. Lower cost. 202 stainless steel contains only 2-4% nickel, much lower than the 8-10% in 304 stainless steel. This makes 202 steel cheaper to produce and purchase. It offers an economical alternative to 304 steel.
2. Moderate corrosion resistance. The lower nickel content in 202 steel means its corrosion resistance is slightly inferior to 304 stainless steel. 202 steel can resist atmospheric corrosion, but it may corrode in more aggressive environments like moisture or certain mild chemicals. It is not suitable for highly corrosive conditions.
3. Higher hardness and strength. 202 stainless steel typically has a higher hardness and tensile strength than 304 steel. The maximum hardness of 202 steel during cold working can reach 320HV, and tensile strength 630-1000 MPa. This makes 202 suitable for structural applications.
4. Weldability and formability. 202 stainless steel maintains good weldability, machinability and formability properties, though slightly inferior to 304 steel. It can still be readily welded and fabricated using standard methods. Proper consideration should be given to avoid weld sensitization.
5. Applications. Typical uses of 202 stainless steel include kitchenware, surgical and dental tools, springs, construction elements, pressure vessels, etc. It should not be used in conditions that would corrode 304 stainless steel. In these situations, 316 steel may be considered.
In summary, 202 stainless steel is an economical chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel. It offers moderate corrosion resistance, higher hardness and strength, and good formability at a lower cost than 304 steel. However, it has limited corrosion resistance and notch toughness compared to 304 steel. It can be a good choice for applications where higher hardness and lower cost are required, but should not be used in highly corrosive conditions.
